School

the front of the Lee's Summit Elementary building

Welcome to Lee’s Summit Elementary School, the first elementary school in Lee’s Summit!

The original limestone lintel, dated 1907, is now found near the front  steps of our school under the cedar tree. The original bell from the old building hangs in the front hallway of our school.  LSE is the location of  one of very few World War I Memorials in the country.  The POE Society and class of 1918 gave the flagpole “to the boys of this school who gave their lives for freedom’s cause” in World War I.

Tradition and history continued through the construction of our present school in 1955.  Beginning in 1957, each 6th grade class designed a special wooden plaque with the signatures of all students graduating to seventh grade.  This unique collection hangs at LSE today and is one of the last activities current 6th graders complete at the end of each year.

In April 2002, voters in the LSR7 School District approved a bond package to build a new gym, library media center, and renovate two classrooms as well as the cafeteria.  Construction was completed in December 2003 with a dedication and ribbon cutting held in April. Following the project, work began to reestablish the science center west of the gym.  LSE volunteers, along with members of the Kansas City Water Gardens Club, constructed a pond  and waterfall in Spring 2004.

In April of 2008, voters approved the addition of a new kindergarten classroom making LSE a two section elementary.  There are two classrooms at all grade levels kindergarten-5th grade.  In August of 2008, Smartboards were installed in every classroom making LSE a learning environment rich in technology.

As always, our primary purpose in education is to develop the necessary skills for life and learning.  Often, though, it is the “extras” that we remember long after our school days are over.  It is friendship, people, activities, special gestures, and fun that become “school days” to us.  The “extras” have always been abundant at LSE.  Its memories embody the very roots of our community.  The staff, PTA, parents, students, and business partners are proud to be a part of this rich history.
