Special Services
The mission of the Special Services Department is to identify, educate, and assist students requiring special services to achieve their full potential.
A comprehensive range of special services are offered by the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District (LSR7) to assist students to reach their potential within the least restrictive environment. In each program, the emphasis is placed on assisting the individual student to gain useful knowledge and experience, grow in self-esteem and understanding, develop social and work-related aptitudes, and learn basic skills for earning a living and for responsible citizenship. The Special Services department includes the following services listed below.
Identified students are protected and afforded a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and limited federal funding is provided. Special education is heavily regulated and students must meet federal and Missouri state criteria and demonstrate the need for specialized services to be eligible. If all of the requirements are met, the team may move forward with development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP is the plan which outlines specialized instruction, accommodations, and modifications which ensure a Free and Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment.
